Day One – Sepilok Orang utan center and Sukau
Meet at hotel lobby or Sandakan airport and drive for 30 minutes to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Watch the scheduled video documentary show at the Sepilok Information and Audio Visual building. The 25 minutes video show will give you a better understanding of the Rehabilitation Process and Programs for the Orangutans in Sepilok Center and its threats to survival. After the video program, proceed to Sepilok Forest Reserve feeding platform and see in actual process of the 3rd stage of rehabilitation program where the orphaned and injured orangutans are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated to forest life. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest and the nearest place to visit a virgin jungle of Borneo, one of the few remaining rainforest in Sabah and to witness the feeding of Orangutan in its natural habitat from a platform in the forest.
After your morning experience with the Orangutans, depart from Sepilok by overland for 2.5 hrs journey to Sukau. Check-in and lunch at the lodge. In late afternoon, proceed for the river cruise to the Menanggol River, a tributary of Kinabatangan River to find the wildlife of Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, including the unique Proboscis monkey, hornbills, kingfishers and many other. The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is noted as one of the best places in Southeast Asia to find and observe wildlife in Borneo. o/n at one of the lodge in Sukau(L,D)
Day Two – Ox-Bow Lake
0600hrs early morning river cruise to the Oxbow lakes. The trip will take you to see the riverine forest and the wildlife in the area as well as an experience to see the magnificent morning mist in the river of Kinabatangan. Oriental Darter, Storm’s stork and various species of Hornbills and Kingfishers is possible sightings. After morning cruise, return to lodge for breakfast. Free at Leisure till lunch. In the afternoon, proceed for another river cruise downstream of Kinabatangan river to find different species of wildlife. Return to lodge before sunset. o/n at Lodge (B,L,D)
Day Three – Gomantong cave and Sandakan City tour
After breakfast, 0800 depart for Gomantong cave, the drive will take approximately 45min. Upon arrival, take 15min walk through the forest before reaching the cave, the short jungle walk will take you to the unique limestone vegetation and lowland forest, here you can observe birds and primates. Explore one of the fascinating cave in Sabah, the cave is home of the million bats and swiflets. The swiflets nest is collected for the famous expensive Chinese edible bird’s nest soup. After exploring the cave, proceed to Sandakan for lunch at local restaurant or at Ocean King Seafood Restaurant. Then proceed for afternoon City Tour. Puh Jih Shih temple is your first stop.
This temple is situated on the hilltop with a commanding view of Sandakan bay, built in 1987, this impressive temple is blazed with red and gold, with writhing dragons and gold gilded Buddha. The Temple is architecturally design to the combination of Chinese culture and Buddhism belief of Chinese community in Sandakan. It is said that the temple protects and brings prosperity to Sandakan Chinese Community. From the temple you drive down to Sandakan town and visit the market and see the local produce such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and many others.
Few minutes drive from town is the Sim Sim Water Village, where this settlement was established in 1897. Here you can experience to walk through the walkway bridge in the village and see the houses on stilt occupied by the local Chinese and Malays, used to be fishing as their main source of income. If time permit, an option to stop at Sandakan War Memorial Park before proceeding to your hotel or Sandakan airport for your return flight to Kota Kinabalu.
