Day One – Selingan island
Meet at Sandakan Airport (Flight MH2042 ETA0740hrs) or Hotel Lobby and transfer to jetty for 1 hours boat ride to Selingan Island. Check-in at chalet and lunch in Selingan cafeteria. Free at leisure, you can swim or snorkel around the island. In the evening, two species of marine turtle – the green and hawksbill species come ashore here to lay their eggs. After dinner, turtle activities will start anytime once the ranger find one nesting on the beach. Witness the laying of eggs and the release of turtle hatching to the sea. O/n Chalet. (L,D)
Day Two – Sepilok and Sandakan City Tour
Early morning Breakfast and depart Selingan Island at 0700hrs. Upon arrival at Sandakan jetty, proceed for 30min drive to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Watch the scheduled video documentary show at the Sepilok Information and Audio Visual building. The 25 minutes video show will give you a better understanding of the Rehabilitation Process and Programs for the Orangutans in Sepilok Center and its threats to survival. After the video program, proceed to Sepilok Forest Reserve feeding platform and see in actual process of the 3rd stage of rehabilitation program where the orphaned and injured orangutans are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated to forest life. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest and the nearest place to visit a virgin jungle of Borneo, one of the few remaining rainforest in Sabah and to witness the feeding of Orangutan in its natural habitat from a platform in the forest.
After the jungle activities at Sepilok, proceed to Sandakan for lunch at local restaurant or at Ocean King Seafood Restaurant. Then proceed for afternoon City Tour. Puh Jih Shih temple is your first stop. This temple is situated on the hilltop with a commanding view of Sandakan bay, built in 1987, this impressive temple is blazed with red and gold, with writhing dragons and gold gilded Buddha. The Temple is architecturally design to the combination of Chinese culture and Buddhism belief of Chinese community of Sandakan. It is said that the temple protects and brings prosperity to Sandakan Chinese Community. From the temple you drive down to Sandakan town and visit the market and see the local produce such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and many others. Few minutes drive from town is the Sim Sim Water Village, where this settlement was established in 1897. Here you can experience to walk through the walkway bridge in the village and see the houses on stilt occupied by the local Chinese and Malays, used to be fishing as their main source of income.
If time permits, an option to stop at Sandakan War Memorial Park before proceeding to your hotel or Sandakan airport for your return flight to Kota Kinabalu.
